This Christmas morning to the family service at St Mary's, Weaverham. For over 1000 years, the people of Weaverham have worshipped here. This lovely old Church, dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, is built of local red sandstone and over-looks the winding River Weaver valley from which Weaverham takes its name. There have been 3 Churches on this site. The first was Saxon and this was substantially built, for it existed in 1277 when King Edward I built the Abbey of Vale Royal. Unfortunately, there is no trace of this early Church. The second Church was built between 1281 and 1360.
As ever, this mornings service was held in a warm and welcoming fashion by Andrew and Jenny Brown, our lovely vicars. They continue a long line of vicars, extending back in an unbroken line to 1299.
It was duly noted that, as ever, I sang as a gale in the night...rather than as a nightingale !
